RECOVERY RADIO SEEN ON NBC’s TODAY SHOW WITH KATIE COURIC mar.
1st
Brief
Glimpse of Recovery Radio Show's Bob and Dr Steve Seen on The
Today Show March 1, 2006

On Saturday, February 18th, a
field production crew from NBC’s "The Today Show" was busy in
our studio for all two hours of our broadcast that night to
obtain video segments for a special feature on Sex Addiction
that was aired on
The Today Show
last week on Wednesday, March 1st. This was for a special
series on "Strange
Addictions" that The Today show had been doing during
the entire Month of February.
Nationwide
viewers caught a brief glimpse of Recovery Radio's Dr. Steve's
pate, as well as a nice 2 second side-profile of Bob during
the Mar. 1 Today Show broadcast. The main focus of the
in-studio filming that night was
Rob Weiss,
LMFT who was our special guest that evening and who sat with
us in the booth at KKLA. Rob is Clinical Director of the
Sexual Recovery Institute- Los Angeles, and a noted sex
addiction therapist, researcher, author, and TV personality.
Rob was featured in The Today Show segment addressing the
issue of Internet Pornography and its recent explosive effect
on fueling Sex Addiction ("the crack cocaine of sex
addition").
The
real star of the Today Show segment, however, was our most
recent on-air guest (March 4th),
Dr. Patrick
Carnes, who was interviewed one-on-one by Today Show
host Katie Couric for about 3 minutes. Dr. Carnes is without
question the world's foremost and well-known authority on Sex
Addiction and truly an icon in his field. He spent the 2 full
hours of our show this past Saturday night sharing his wisdom,
hope, and experience with our "live" Recovery Radio Show
audience.
Archived Recovery Radio shows
featuring both Rob Weiss (Feb. 18) and Dr. Carnes (Mar. 4) as
our special guests may be heard anytime, free, by going to our
website
ARCHIVES
page.
The key messages which were brought across very compellingly
on
The Today Show
Mar. 1 feature were the very ones that Recovery Radio had been
putting out all month of February in our 5-Part Special Series
on Sex Addiction:
-
Sex
Addiction is no joke.
-
It is a
bona fide addiction that wrecks lives and families no
differently than addiction to drugs or alcohol.
-
It is
deeply shame-based; our society must understand and accept
sex addiction, and provide help for those individuals,
spouses, and families who are affected.
-
It is
perhaps the worlds most fast-growing addiction in terms of
numbers afflicted, largely due to the recent surge in
Internet Pornography.
-
Treatment is available through the combination of therapy
and active involvement in one of the 5 existing 12-Step
support groups for SA.
While the focus of The Today
Show segment on SA was more on our guests than on us, we were
honored to be included in this series, and to be able to help
NBC, The Today Show, Rob Weiss, and Dr. Carnes in their effort
to educate the public about Sex Addiction and to provide hope
to those affected.
The NBC associate producer who was present during the filming
during our broadcast on Feb. 18th and who oversaw the video
filming was deeply impressed by our show. He and the entire
video crew were very much taken with our show, all of what we
are doing at Recovery Radio, and the "shocking" and poignant
nature of our calls and our callers.
"This is truly life at its most raw", he said. "Fascinating;
electrifying; it is truly remarkable what you are doing to
help those with addiction."
He plans to make a "pitch" to his executive producer at NBC’s
The Today Show to consider doing a feature sometime in the
future on The Recovery Radio Show!! We will see....stay
tuned!!!

THIS WEEK'S SHOW:
SATURDAY, MARCH 11TH, 2006
March Pot Pourri
Intervention: Gently Guiding the Addict into Treatment
Special Guest: Ken
Seeley, Founder of
Intervention 911 and Featured Interventionist, A&E's "INTERVENTION"
TV Program
On
March 11th, we will be joined by Ken Seeley, CNDAI,
Founder of
Intervention 911
. i911 is a firm of professional
interventionists whose sole function is to facilitate
surrounding an active addict with their loved ones in a planned
effort to gently guide the addict into treatment for their
addiction.
Of course, no one can force an addict to do anything!!! What
they do is to use their considerable bag of professional and
personal tools to assist the family and loved ones in a planned
and organized "intervention". An intervention is essentially a
family meeting where the loved ones explain to the addict in
loving terms what he/she (the addict) has done to them, and to
set firm boundaries and specific terms for the addict from that
point forward. The goal is always to pull the active addict out
from their life of drugs and misery, and to nudge them into a
formal drug and alcohol treatment program.
Ken is truly a pioneer in his field; his uncanny abilities have
landed him a recurring role as an interventionist on A&E's "INTERVENTION"
TV program. His colleagues and partners Kevin Dixon, CNDAI,
National Executive Director, and Sharon Blacklidge, CNDAI, CCDC,
Interventionist have also been featured on TV- on CBS's Early
Show where they jointly led the intervention on Jennifer Jicka
as aired on that program. Ken and his firm are the preferred
interventionists for the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, CA.
We have found at Recovery Radio that most of our listeners who
have problem ("active") addicts on their hands have absolutely
NO IDEA what the next move might be. How do I get my husband
/wife/ son/ daughter into treatment??? The answer is to do an
intervention.
Most addicts will not hit their own bottom and then
independently come to the realization that their life is in
ruins and that they need help ("hopeless, helpless
demoralization") . Most addicts who eventually find recovery do
so because of pressure placed on them by their loved ones. A
planned intervention conducted by a professional is by far the
most effective way to do this. At Recovery Radio we always
suggest this technique as "the next move" for callers and
listeners who contact us for advice.
Ken Seeley and
i911 are THE largest
and one of the oldest intervention firms in the nation. We are
pleased to have Ken as our guest next Saturday night, March
11th.
Don’t miss this exciting and highly informative show! Live!!
This Saturday night, March 11th 6 – 8P Pacific Time on 99.5 FM
KKLA Los Angeles and 10 other cities…and…streaming on the web.
Our show call-in number is 888/995-5552 for your questions and

STRAIGHT TALK FROM THE
DOC by Dr Steve
Medications in Recovery
Recently,
one of my close friends and colleagues has been suffering with
acute and chronic pain from degenerative arthritis. It is
painful for ME to watch HIM limp around with a sorrowful look
on his face, obviously very much suffering with every step,
and even while just sitting. He, like me, is in recovery and
working a good program.
What medications can be used in such a situation??
Many people in recovery ASSUME that ALL potentially
habit-forming medications are OUT!! This would include such
useful and effective pain medications as Vicodin, codeine,
Darvocet, and the like. After all, in our meetings we so often
hear the stories from relapsers who said their relapse began
immediately after being given pain medications for a bona fide
painful medical problem.
Are such medications absolutely prohibited in recovery??
NO, they are NOT!!!
Legitimate use of addictive pain medications is OK as long as
they are prescribed by a physician who KNOWS we are in
recovery, and… IF we scrupulously follow our doctor’s
directions. For most of us, it is best that our addictive
medications be kept by a trusted friend, spouse, or perhaps
best of all, our sponsor. Including a third person in the
administration of our addictive medications better assures
that we will follow the doctor’s directions to a “T”.
This is Dr Steve, giving it to you Straight!!!

4. THOUGHT FOR RECOVERY- by BOB MUNCK
Each week
on our show this past year, Bob has shares his "Thought for
Recovery", a unique personal reflection meant to inspire those
of us in Recovery. This is from a man with 15 years of
personal sobriety, and with many years of recovery leadership.
He has seen and heard it all. He has sponsored hundreds of men
during that time. Bob's "Thoughts" will focus on pearls of
wisdom that all alcoholics and addicts in Recovery can use to
enhance their own Recovery. We reprint this week's Thought for
Recovery here:
INTERVENTION: "To come between points in time or events"
The
word intervention means “to come between points of time or
events”. For families that have a loved one who is active in
their addiction it is extremely painful, stressful and harmful
to sit back and watch that loved one destroy his or her own
life and the lives of all family members.
An “Intervention” is a deliberate process by which change is
introduced to the addict and his/her family; change of their
thoughts, feelings and behaviors. But more importantly, it
educates the family about the disease of addiction and how it
has affected the addict as well as the entire family and
surrounding network of people.
The overall objective of an intervention is to confront the
addict in a non-threatening way, and to allow them to see
their self-destructive behavior and how it affects themselves,
their family and their friends. The more immediate objective
of the Intervention is for the addict (who by nature is
self-destructive) to listen carefully and to accept the help
that is being offered to them.
With the help of a highly qualified drug and alcohol
Intervention Specialist, family members and loved ones are
given the tools necessary to help the addict in a
compassionate and effective way.
In my opinion, A Professional Interventionist is the only
facilitator who can effectively help the addict (and his/her
family!!) to accept the help for Recovery that they so
desperately need. Please do not try this at home!!! Do not do
an intervention yourselves without the help of a highly
qualified intervention specialist- A professional
interventionist is MUCH better qualified to do this, and as a
group of professionals, the Interventionist has a 97% success
rate in bringing the addict into Recovery. The only individual
who can effectively come between the addict, his family and
the addictions is a highly trained interventionist.
Dear God I pray the families are listening to the truth
that they no longer have to live the way of addictions ever
again, but they can experience the Freedom from addictions
forever more. Amen

MARKETING OPPORTUNITIES
WITH RECOVERY RADIO
Recovery Radio Seeks
Show Sponsors
The
Recovery Radio Show is more that just a radio show.
We are a comprehensive set of resources for addicts and their
families. Our uniqueness is that each week we reach hundreds of
thousands of addicts and their families who are still
suffering…over 500,000 people each week. We do this in many
ways, the most obvious of which is over the airwaves every
Saturday night in Los Angeles and 10 other cities,
coast-to-coast.
In addition, we will soon be publishing “California Together”,
a monthly newspaper targeted at the recovery community
throughout Southern California. We will be publishing this in
partnership with Bill and Barbara Brown, publishers of “Arizona
Together”, which periodical has been meeting the needs of
the Arizona recovery community for over 15 years. The two will
be sister publications.
We maintain one of the most popular “recovery radio” websites in
the world! Both Google and Yahoo have rated ours to be #4, and
this after only 6 months of existence! That is phenomenal, and
testimony to the fact that we are “doing something right!” Our
weekly e-newsletter, the FLASH! reaches many people each week as
well, with timely updates on what is happening with Recovery
Radio and the recovery world in general.
Future projects include an “800 HELPLINE”, the HOW Program USA
“recovery scholarships”, Fourth Step Workshops with Bob and Dr
Steve, and “The Art of Recovery- Southern California” recovery
community annual convention.
What does this all mean? It means that those organizations whose
business is related to recovery and/or recovery products have a
unique opportunity to engage- at the ground-floor level- in an
extremely effective marketing alliance with The Recovery Radio
Show.
Ours is a highly-targeted audience. We reach over 500,000 people
each week (conservative estimate). Approximately 60% of our
callers are family members or loved ones of an alcoholic or
addict who NEEDS RECOVERY. They are looking for solutions to get
their loved on into recovery. About 30% of our callers are from
addicts or alcoholics who are IN RECOVERY, and want and need
recovery-oriented products.
More so, ALL of our listeners are learning more about a
societal problem that in reality affects essentially every
single person in this nation. Addiction is by far the #1 public
health problem in the nation today, costing our society over $4
Billion/year. It is long overdue that our nation accepts
addiction for the medical disease that it is. We are doing our
part to effect that change.
If you are with a business or organization that might benefit
from a marketing relationship with Recovery Radio, please
contact us. We will be happy to discuss the many ways that you
can benefit from joining our team…and at the same time help AND
benefit from our growing fan and listener base.
