1. THIS WEEK'S SHOW: SATURDAY, MARCH 18TH, 2006 March Pot Pourri

PROMISING NEW MEDICAL APPROACHES TO ADDICTION TREATMENT: NEURORECEPTOR MODULATORS- Campral(TM) and PROMETA(TM)

Addiction is unique as a disease in that it has three components: Medical, Emotional, and Spiritual. Successful treatment depends upon addressing all three; failure to do so results in relapse and ongoing addiction. By definition, the disease of addiction is chronic and relapsing in nature.

Medical approaches to the management of addiction, both "drugs" and alcohol, have lagged far behind other approaches in terms of efficacy. For example, methadone maintenance for opiate addiction, and Antabuse for alcoholism are two examples of "medical" approaches to addiction management that in the end, do not work.

Until recently, the only broadly successful approach to addiction management for large numbers of afflicted people has been that of Alcoholics Anonymous, the "12-Step Group" concept. The 12-Steps process focuses primarily on the emotional and spiritual aspects of addiction. Clearly, it does work!!

This week we will take a closer look at two promising new medical approaches that have recently become available to the public. We'll examine PROMETA(TM), a treatment protocol licensed by Hythiam, Inc. for alcohol, methamphetamine, and cocaine addiction and which is thought to modify the GABA receptors of the brain. Current research suggests that PROMETA(TM) reduces cravings for the those drugs, plus speeds up return of normal brain function ("cognition").

We'll also take a look at Campral(TM), or acamprosate, a drug manufactured by Forest Pharmaceuticals that is FDA-approved for maintenance treatment of alcoholism only. Like PROMETA(TM), Campral(TM) appears to modify a brain neurotransmitter receptor complex, in its case, the glutamate system receptors.

Both Campral(TM) and PROMETA(TM) have an affect on brain neurotransmitter receptors that has the overall effect of "normalizing" them after long periods of exposure to drugs. Chronic drug exposure in brain tissues in turn causes changes in those receptors, as they attempt to adapt to the ongoing drug presence. Biologic tissues do not like change or alteration, and will always try to adapt themselves in such a way as to revert to a "neutral" or "normal" mode, or "pre-drug" state.

Unfortunately, the "adapted" receptors do not function normally, and the end result is drug craving when the drug is no longer present on the receptors ("withdrawal"), and alteration of basic brain function all of the time, but especially during periods of withdrawal. We see this in drug addicts as abnormal cognition; being "out of it", unable to think normally, and being "whacked out". Both Campral(TM) and PROMETA(TM) are thought to speed up "normalization" of drug-damaged neuroreceptors.

There is no question that the appearance of these two medical tools represents the start of an exciting and revolutionary new trend in the treatment of the disease of addiction. These are but two of many new medications and medication combinations that we are likely to see in the coming years.

Don’t miss this exciting and highly informative show! Live!! This Saturday night, March 25th 6 – 8P Pacific Time on 99.5 FM KKLA Los Angeles and 10 other cities…and…streaming on the web. Our show call-in number is 888/995-5552 for your questions and comments. Remember….. RECOVERY WORKS!!!

2. STRAIGHT TALK FROM THE DOC by Dr Steve
Mending those Messed up Receptors

Chronic drug use of any variety leads to alteration of brain receptors. With time, the presence of drug at the receptor sites causes them to adapt, leading to the phenomenon of “tolerance”. Once the chronically addicted individual quits using, and when the drug is no longer docked at the receptor sites, the brain goes “haywire”. We experience this phenomenon as “withdrawal”.

Withdrawal is not only unpleasant, it is also a situation where the brain is in chaos and not working normally. Our thought processes and our “cognition” are altered such that we cannot think normally, nor can we use our brain’s higher functions as they were meant to work.

PROMETA™ is a medical protocol that helps to "normalize" the brain’s altered GABA receptors more rapidly. This promising technique uses a combination of 3 available prescription medications along with nutritional supplements, which, together, have been shown to not only speed up resolution of the drug withdrawal symptom phase, but to significantly speed up return of normal cognition. PROMETA(TM) also reduces or even eliminates drug cravings, a crucial benefit that must be considered a huge one for any addict trying to not obsess on drugs and to avoid relapse.

Quicker healing of brain receptors cannot be underestimated. To date, the ONLY known approach to brain healing in the chronic addict was “TIME"- time for nature to take it’s course in returning the brain tissues to a pre-addicted state once again. Done this way, brain healing takes weeks, months, even years. With PROMETA(TM), healing appears to occur in a matter of days to weeks; major improvement is recognizable in a matter of hours.

In the longer term picture, enduring recovery depends upon both early and ongoing participation in behavioral treatment processes ("group therapy"). PROMETA™ speeds up the addict's ability to "engage" mentally, and hence to participate in group therapy almost immediately. And as noted, it also reduces cravings- another extremely important benefit which allows the early recovering addict to focus on recovery processes- and not on obsessing over drugs.

PROMETA™ is a medical breakthrough which, if affirmed by clinical trials coming out later this year, represents a MAJOR breakthrough in medical science and addiction medicine. A Nobel Prize would not be out of the question for the developers of PROMETA(TM) if the early promises and hopes for it are confirmed in actual experience. It works for alcohol and stimulant drugs such as methamphetamine and cocaine, but does not work for opiates, marijuana, or benzodiazepines.

In closing, medical tools like PROMETA(TM) provide a "jump start" into recovery. But recovery does not begin and end with them. There is no cure for addiction; only long-term remission. Treatment with PROMETA(TM) is therefore merely a wonderful new  beginning of a life-long process of keeping an extremely vicious dog at bay.

My opinion? If YOU are a struggling, chronically relapsing alcoholic and/or speed or cocaine addict, you will WANT to take a look at PROMETA™.

This is Dr Steve, giving it to you straight!

3. THOUGHT FOR RECOVERY- by BOB MUNCK

Each week on our show this past year, Bob has shares his "Thought for Recovery", a unique personal reflection meant to inspire those of us in Recovery. This is from a man with 15 years of personal sobriety, and with many years of recovery leadership. He has seen and heard it all. He has sponsored hundreds of men during that time. Bob's "Thoughts" will focus on pearls of wisdom that all alcoholics and addicts in Recovery can use to enhance their own Recovery. We reprint this week's Thought for Recovery here:

Learn To Get Angry Slowly:
"Angry words spoken quickly are usually regretted later."

Take time to make sure that you have good reason to be angry. Learn to avoid jumping to unwarranted conclusions. Listen and ask questions.

This is why James told us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry (Jas. 1:19). One of the best reasons is that God Himself is slow to get angry, and our goal in life is to let Him form Christ-like character in us.

King David, who knew about anger, said, "Reflect prayerfully on your anger. Examine your motives. Ask yourself questions like these:

  • What did I feel angry about today?
  • Where is my anger coming from?
  • Did my anger further God's interests or my own interests?

Change Your Beliefs About God. Whether we realize it or not, most of our feelings are based upon our deeply held beliefs about where life, security and "significance" originated within us. Our anger problem is rooted not in our feelings, but rather, in what we believe about God.

The challenge according to the New Testament is not to change our feelings, but to change our thinking. In the awareness of what God has done for us, the apostle Paul urged us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Rom. 12:2).

"Dear God, I pray that I will be Transformed by the Renewing of my mind, by You, so that my pattern of thinking will result in changed feelings."

4.  MARKETING OPPORTUNITIES WITH RECOVERY RADIO
Recovery Radio Seeks Show Sponsors

The Recovery Radio Show is more that just a radio show. We are a comprehensive set of resources for addicts and their families. Our uniqueness is that each week we reach hundreds of thousands of addicts and their families who are still suffering…over 500,000 people each week. We do this in many ways, the most obvious of which is over the airwaves every Saturday night in Los Angeles and 10 other cities, coast-to-coast.

In addition, we will soon be publishing “California Together”, a monthly newspaper targeted at the recovery community throughout Southern California. We will be publishing this in partnership with Bill and Barbara Brown, publishers of “Arizona Together”, which periodical has been meeting the needs of the Arizona recovery community for over 15 years. The two will be sister publications.

We maintain one of the most popular “recovery radio” websites in the world! Both Google and Yahoo have rated ours to be #4, and this after only 6 months of existence! That is phenomenal, and testimony to the fact that we are “doing something right!” Our weekly e-newsletter, the FLASH! reaches many people each week as well, with timely updates on what is happening with Recovery Radio and the recovery world in general.

Future projects include an “800 HELPLINE”, the HOW Program USA “recovery scholarships”, Fourth Step Workshops with Bob and Dr Steve, and “The Art of Recovery- Southern California” recovery community annual convention.

What does this all mean? It means that those organizations whose business is related to recovery and/or recovery products have a unique opportunity to engage- at the ground-floor level- in an extremely effective marketing alliance with The Recovery Radio Show.

Ours is a highly-targeted audience. We reach over 500,000 people each week (conservative estimate). Approximately 60% of our callers are family members or loved ones of an alcoholic or addict who NEEDS RECOVERY. They are looking for solutions to get their loved on into recovery. About 30% of our callers are from addicts or alcoholics who are IN RECOVERY, and want and need recovery-oriented products.

More so, ALL of our listeners are learning more about a societal problem that in reality affects essentially every single person in this nation. Addiction is by far the #1 public health problem in the nation today, costing our society over $4 Billion/year. It is long overdue that our nation accepts addiction for the medical disease that it is. We are doing our part to effect that change.

If you are with a business or organization that might benefit from a marketing relationship with Recovery Radio, please contact us. We will be happy to discuss the many ways that you can benefit from joining our team…and at the same time help AND benefit from our growing fan and listener base.
