THIS WEEK'S SHOW:
SATURDAY, APRIL 1ST, 2006 - April Pot
Pourri
HAPPY BIRTHDAY RECOVERY RADIO SHOW!!
CELEBRATING ONE YEAR OF BRINGING THE HOPE OF RECOVERY AND
FREEDOM FROM ADDICTIONS TO ADDICTS AND THEIR FAMILIES
- Featuring the callers we've
helped
One year ago
this week marks the first broadcast of the Recovery Radio
Show. Since then Bob and Dr Steve have grown with our audience
through 52 shows!!! For two recovering addicts and alcoholics,
neither one of which had any experience or knowledge
whatsoever in radio or the media, this fact alone is truly
remarkable!!
Recovery Radio had its origin 15 months ago as wild dream
in Bob Munck's mind. Friends at his church kept telling
him over and over that his persuasive and inspiring speaking
abilities needed to have a bigger and broader audience than
just the church congregation. For years, Bob had been
unassumingly helping any and all addicts around him; helping
them find recovery and to avoid relapse.
Bob had by now cobbled together nearly 15 years of sobriety
after "excusing himself" for several years during the middle
of his life from his wife, family and job to become a
hopeless, helpless street addict. He shot up heroin and speed,
drank and used anything that he could get his hands on, and
came to sleep on the street and eat out of dumpsters. A jail
house vision and a personal "bottom" led to his finding Christ
and Recovery. He worked his way back to becoming a respected
and revered husband, father, and successful businessman once
again.
A chance meeting with a radio show producer, Michael
Tomlinson, led to his making into reality the dream of
creating a show dedicated to bringing the hope of recovery to
addicts and their families anywhere within the reach of radio.
Dr Steve, a physician whose own story of addiction was
equally compelling, met Bob through a common friend as the
show was in its planning stages in early 2005. He joined Bob
as his partner and permanent Co-Host shortly after the launch
of the Recovery Radio Show.
Dr Steve brought to the show a complementary presence that
adds the credibility that only a real physician can bring to a
show like this. Listeners also cite his "Midwestern common
sense" plus his gentle manner and unique sense of humor as
reasons that the show is so very effective in bringing useful
information about recovery to them.
This week
we will reminisce about the origin of the Recovery Radio Show.
We will reflect upon and recap some of the most riveting
callers and their stories. We will interview several of them
on-air, and find out what happened with them!!! We will also
chat with some of our most interesting and entertaining guests
and accept their well-wishes on our Birthday, including author
Bill Borchert, sex addiction therapist Rob Weiss,
addiction expert and leader Dr. Patrick Carnes, and
many others!! You will be amazed and inspired with what
Recovery can do!!!
Don’t miss this exciting and highly informative show! Live!!
This Saturday night, April 1st, 6 – 8P Pacific Time on
99.5 FM KKLA Los Angeles and 10 other cities…and…streaming on
the web. Our show call-in number is 888-995-5552 for your

STRAIGHT TALK FROM THE
DOC by Dr Steve
April Fools’!!! - Why addicts are the scoundrels we are when
active in our addiction
“Hi,
Honey!! I promise to quit drinking...tomorrow!!!”
“May I borrow $100 dollars? I’ll pay you back next week; I
promise!!!”
“I will sell you this Brooklyn Bridge- Only $500 if you buy
it now!!!"
April Fools!!!
Addicts are by nature swindlers, cheaters, liars,
manipulators, scoundrels- everything that makes us unlovable
and which thrusts us to the fringes of good society.
Why is this so?? Why do we behave this way when we are active
in our addiction??
Addiction is a brain disease. The basic pathology is that the
addict’s brain processes pleasurable experiences in a way that
is quite different from the so-called “normie”. In the addict,
dopamine accumulates excessively in the areas of our brains
where pleasure or satisfaction is processed (nucleus accumbens).
The amount of dopamine produced there in response to
pleasurable experiences is significantly higher and more
quickly gained than in the normal person. The result is
obsessive, compulsive efforts to do it again.
In the normal person, “pleasure” or ‘satisfaction” is nature’s
way of rewarding us for accomplishing necessary biologic
functions- Ones that keep us healthy and alive, and better
assure propagation of our species. Hence we enjoy a good meal,
a job well done, a beautiful day, relieving ourselves, and of
course, having sex. It assures that we keep doing what we need
to do to stay alive and to procreate.
Drugs act upon the brain’s pleasure center to create a false
impression of a job well done (emphasis).
When we get high, we’ve done nothing that warrants a
pleasurable reinforcement; we get a false signal that we’ve
done something that better assures our continuing life,
health, or species propagation. And this false reward is
usually much more intense and euphoric than is a normal
pleasure response.
The end result is that once a drug high is experienced, the
addict wants MORE!!! He or she will do ANYTHING to re-create
or exceed the euphoric feeling that a drug or alcohol first
produced. The addict will sooner or later come to the point
where he focuses SOLELY on recreating the euphoria that was
once experienced. It is never to be; only strived for
(tolerance phenomenon).
Even the most basic of life-sustaining behaviors in the addict
take second seat to recreating that high. Food, sex, work,
play, hobbies, NOTHING will get in the way of finding the next
fix or drink.
Lying, cheating, stealing and all negative behaviors induced
by our addiction are a direct result of our
pleasure-processing disorder in the pursuit of recreating the
high we once experienced but will never again attain. In a
sense, we cannot help it.
As addicts, we are sick people; not bad people. Recovery is
the solution.
This is Dr Steve, giving it to you straight!

3. THOUGHT FOR RECOVERY- by BOB MUNCK
Each week
on our show this past year, Bob has shares his "Thought for
Recovery", a unique personal reflection meant to inspire those
of us in Recovery. This is from a man with 15 years of
personal sobriety, and with many years of recovery leadership.
He has seen and heard it all. He has sponsored hundreds of men
during that time. Bob's "Thoughts" will focus on pearls of
wisdom that all alcoholics and addicts in Recovery can use to
enhance their own Recovery. We reprint this week's Thought for
Recovery here:
FEAR IS OUR ENEMY
When we
are afraid, we tend to shut ourselves down. We don't reach out
to others; we don't communicate our real feelings. The
resulting isolation is painful.
What, then, do we do next?
Addicts often attempt to fight fear with self medication. We
use Alcohol, Drugs, Gambling, Food, Sex, and Anger to drown
our anxieties, and hope that if we bury them deeply enough
they will never surface again.
Unfortunately, Dope, Alcohol and “Bad (addictive) Behavior” do
not make fear or pain go away. What DOES go away is our
self-esteem and confidence. And the further we withdraw and
isolate ourselves, the more our fears will increase and
control our emotions.
There IS a way out of this vicious cycle of Addiction: the way
of Recovery along with its abstinence from drugs and addictive
compulsive behaviors, surrender, and unconditional love. When
we turn our will and our lives over to the care of a loving
and forgiving God, and, believing that we are given just what
we need each day, our spiritual selves shows us how to fight
fear with the weapon of love.
That way EVERYBODY wins. If we are convinced that God loves
us, we can then take the risk of reflecting that love back
towards those around us. We can unconditionally accept and
love ourselves exactly the way we are right then, and accept
and love life as it presents itself each moment. When we are
filled with the love of God, we’re not afraid, and we needn’t
turn to our Addictions.
Dear God, I pray that you will Show me how to be filled
with your kind of love which conquers all of our fear.

MARKETING OPPORTUNITIES
WITH RECOVERY RADIO
Recovery Radio Seeks
Show Sponsors
The
Recovery Radio Show is more that just a radio show.
We are a comprehensive set of resources for addicts and their
families. Our uniqueness is that each week we reach hundreds of
thousands of addicts and their families who are still
suffering…over 500,000 people each week. We do this in many
ways, the most obvious of which is over the airwaves every
Saturday night in Los Angeles and 10 other cities,
coast-to-coast.
In addition, we will soon be publishing “California Together”,
a monthly newspaper targeted at the recovery community
throughout Southern California. We will be publishing this in
partnership with Bill and Barbara Brown, publishers of “Arizona
Together”, which periodical has been meeting the needs of
the Arizona recovery community for over 15 years. The two will
be sister publications.
We maintain one of the most popular “recovery radio” websites in
the world! Both Google and Yahoo have rated ours to be #4, and
this after only 6 months of existence! That is phenomenal, and
testimony to the fact that we are “doing something right!” Our
weekly e-newsletter, the FLASH! reaches many people each week as
well, with timely updates on what is happening with Recovery
Radio and the recovery world in general.
Future projects include an “800 HELPLINE”, the HOW Program USA
“recovery scholarships”, Fourth Step Workshops with Bob and Dr
Steve, and “The Art of Recovery- Southern California” recovery
community annual convention.
What does this all mean? It means that those organizations whose
business is related to recovery and/or recovery products have a
unique opportunity to engage- at the ground-floor level- in an
extremely effective marketing alliance with The Recovery Radio
Show.
Ours is a highly-targeted audience. We reach over 500,000 people
each week (conservative estimate). Approximately 60% of our
callers are family members or loved ones of an alcoholic or
addict who NEEDS RECOVERY. They are looking for solutions to get
their loved on into recovery. About 30% of our callers are from
addicts or alcoholics who are IN RECOVERY, and want and need
recovery-oriented products.
More so, ALL of our listeners are learning more about a
societal problem that in reality affects essentially every
single person in this nation. Addiction is by far the #1 public
health problem in the nation today, costing our society over $4
Billion/year. It is long overdue that our nation accepts
addiction for the medical disease that it is. We are doing our
part to effect that change.
If you are with a business or organization that might benefit
from a marketing relationship with Recovery Radio, please
contact us. We will be happy to discuss the many ways that you
can benefit from joining our team…and at the same time help AND
benefit from our growing fan and listener base.
