THIS WEEK'S SHOW:
SATURDAY, APRIL 8th, 2006
-
April Pot
Pourri
BACK TO SCHOOL: IT NOT ONLY
MAKES YOU SMARTER...IT
KEEPS YOU SOBER!!
SOBER LIVING BY THE SEA'S TEACH PROGRAM
Special Guests: Brendan Bickley (Director of Education)
and Jana Tufty (Program Director of the TEACH Program)
Sober Living by the
Sea
Many addicts and alcoholics who have finally found recovery
find themselves sitting in a rehab facility, newly-sober, and
with plenty of time on their hands once again. No longer must
they obsess on drugs and alcohol and the accompanying
time-filling rituals of procurement and using. Being an active
addict was exhausting work and it fried the brain!! Once
detoxed, that brain may not be working quite as well as it
once did. Yet, it yearns to do something useful once again.
What about going back to school??
Many early-recovering addicts who abandoned their educations
while mired in their addictions now wish to resume pursuit of
a degree. Yet, they are daunted by the seemingly formidable
obstacles in doing just that. Am I really capable of doing
this? How on earth can I gather together all of my prior
(spotty!!) college transcripts from prior institutions to
define a starting point? How can I learn to acquire the
discipline and study skills necessary do the work? Is my
"fried brain" even capable of doing this, or has it been
irreparably damaged? How do I find a college that will take
me? How do I get there (now that I cannot drive!!)? And on and
on.

Brendan Bickley
(Director of Education) and Jana Tufty (Program
Director of the TEACH Program)
Sober Living by the Sea |
|
Brendan Bickley has been
there. So has Jana Tufty. Both now possess college
degrees- lots of them!!- and together oversee a wonderful
program at Sober
Living by the Sea in Newport Beach, CA that assists
early-recovering addicts to resume their formal educations. It
is called the TEACH Program. Not only have they shown
unequivocally that it is possible to successfully return to
school, but that by engaging in serious pursuit of a
degree, sobriety maintenance rates of over 70% have been
achieved! This startling fact alone is worthy of taking a
close look at this exciting program. Brendan is Sober Living's
Director of Education; Jana is Program Director of the TEACH
Program. They will both join us this Saturday evening to
answer these questions and LOTS MORE!
In
addition, we will discuss Sober Living's many other great
programs for recovery from addictions, as well as recovery
from other behavioral issues including trauma, women's issues,
adolescents, dual diagnoses, and lots more. Any issue
involving addictions- and especially recovery from addictions-
is fair game this night and always!
Don’t miss this exciting and highly informative show! Live!!
This Saturday night, April 8th, 6 – 8P Pacific Time on 99.5
FM KKLA Los Angeles and 10 other cities…and…streaming on
the web. Our show call-in number is 888/995-5552 for your
questions and comments. Remember….. RECOVERY WORKS!!!

STRAIGHT TALK FROM THE
DOC by Dr Steve
Medications for
Alcoholism: Campral(TM)
Many
alcoholics are unaware that there exist medications that are
helpful for maintaining sobriety from alcohol. Although many do
not need such medical “helpers”, some alcoholics would benefit
greatly from them.
As of 2006, there are three medications that are approved by the
FDA for adjunctive use in the medical management of alcoholism.
Two others have been used "off-label" (ie, are not specifically
approved by the FDA for this use, but scientific data suggest
that they may be helpful). In coming weeks I will discuss all of
them.
About
2 years ago, a promising new medication called
Campral was brought to market. It is approved by the FDA for
“maintenance of sobriety for alcohol addiction in conjunction
with behavioral therapy”. It is estimated that there are nearly
3-5 Million active alcoholics in the USA today that might
benefit from this medication as part of their recovery program.
As of late 2005, only about 100, 000 of them took advantage of
Campral (less than 3%).
Studies have shown that
Campral, along with meaningful participation in behavioral
therapy such as Alcoholics Anonymous, leads to a sobriety rate
that is 2-4 times that of alcoholics that took placebo. The only
common side effect is diarrhea; usually mild and self-limited.
Campral is thought to heal or "normalize" the altered
glutamate brain receptors that are part of the abnormal brain
physiology of alcohol addiction. Those who benefit from
Campral find it easier to deal with the post-detox symptoms
of anxiety, irritability, restlessness, and other unpleasant
feelings that together make it tempting to take a drink- to find
relief from those symptoms.
The increased sobriety rate is very significant, and
Campral may be the key to keeping sober for many otherwise
“hopeless, helpless, chronically relapsing alchoholics”.
My opinion?? If YOU are a chronic relapsing alcoholic whose is
struggling with YOUR sobriety, you just may want to take a
closer look at
Campral. See your doctor and ask him if YOU would benefit.
This is Dr Steve, giving it to you straight!!

THOUGHT FOR RECOVERY- by BOB MUNCK
Each week
on our show this past year, Bob has shares his "Thought for
Recovery", a unique personal reflection meant to inspire those
of us in Recovery. This is from a man with 15 years of
personal sobriety, and with many years of recovery leadership.
He has seen and heard it all. He has sponsored hundreds of men
during that time. Bob's "Thoughts" will focus on pearls of
wisdom that all alcoholics and addicts in Recovery can use to
enhance their own Recovery. We reprint this week's Thought for
Recovery here:
TURNING OUR LIFE OVER TO GOD
What
does it mean to turn over our life to God?
For most of us, this means finding security.
We look for security in many places. Some of us look to our
husbands, wives, lovers, friends, parents or our children.
Perhaps we seek our security in our jobs, money or material
wealth. But none of these avenues brings lasting contentment
as we've each probably discovered; just as pills, alcohol,
dope, gambling, sex or perhaps even food failed to give us
lasting security.
Security is knowing that God’s spirit is with us always, from
our very birth thru God's grace. It's just that we haven't
tapped into the source of God. Perhaps we don't even know the
source, but it's been with us always, awaiting our realization
of it.
We must remember that we do not control people, places or
things; that is God’s job. If we go to him, he will never
allow us be alone!
No step that we ever take is alone. Each breath we take is in
partnership with God’s source of strength and security within
us. We have the choice to accept this partnership with God at
any time. And this guarantee of security in all things and at
all times is the gift of freedom and Grace from God.
Our desire for security is God-given. The security we desire
is also given by God to us. We are secure today and every day.
Dear God,
I pray that each and every step I take is in concert with you.
I need experience nothing alone ever again! I can pray and tap
in to your plentiful source of strength and grace awaiting me,
right now with you in control forever! Amen!

MARKETING OPPORTUNITIES
WITH RECOVERY RADIO
Recovery Radio Seeks
Show Sponsors
The
Recovery Radio Show is more that just a radio show.
We are a comprehensive set of resources for addicts and their
families. Our uniqueness is that each week we reach hundreds of
thousands of addicts and their families who are still
suffering…over 500,000 people each week. We do this in many
ways, the most obvious of which is over the airwaves every
Saturday night in Los Angeles and 10 other cities,
coast-to-coast.
In addition, we will soon be publishing “California Together”,
a monthly newspaper targeted at the recovery community
throughout Southern California. We will be publishing this in
partnership with Bill and Barbara Brown, publishers of “Arizona
Together”, which periodical has been meeting the needs of
the Arizona recovery community for over 15 years. The two will
be sister publications.
We maintain one of the most popular “recovery radio” websites in
the world! Both Google and Yahoo have rated ours to be #4, and
this after only 6 months of existence! That is phenomenal, and
testimony to the fact that we are “doing something right!” Our
weekly e-newsletter, the FLASH! reaches many people each week as
well, with timely updates on what is happening with Recovery
Radio and the recovery world in general.
Future projects include an “800 HELPLINE”, the HOW Program USA
“recovery scholarships”, Fourth Step Workshops with Bob and Dr
Steve, and “The Art of Recovery- Southern California” recovery
community annual convention.
What does this all mean? It means that those organizations whose
business is related to recovery and/or recovery products have a
unique opportunity to engage- at the ground-floor level- in an
extremely effective marketing alliance with The Recovery Radio
Show.
Ours is a highly-targeted audience. We reach over 500,000 people
each week (conservative estimate). Approximately 60% of our
callers are family members or loved ones of an alcoholic or
addict who NEEDS RECOVERY. They are looking for solutions to get
their loved on into recovery. About 30% of our callers are from
addicts or alcoholics who are IN RECOVERY, and want and need
recovery-oriented products.
More so, ALL of our listeners are learning more about a
societal problem that in reality affects essentially every
single person in this nation. Addiction is by far the #1 public
health problem in the nation today, costing our society over $4
Billion/year. It is long overdue that our nation accepts
addiction for the medical disease that it is. We are doing our
part to effect that change.
If you are with a business or organization that might benefit
from a marketing relationship with Recovery Radio, please
contact us. We will be happy to discuss the many ways that you
can benefit from joining our team…and at the same time help AND
benefit from our growing fan and listener base.
