BIGGER THAN LIFE
HOLLYWOOD PR AGENT TO THE STARS TELLS RIVETING STORIES OF
ADDICTION AND RECOVERY
Special Guest:
Gary Stromberg, Author
The Harder They
Fall (Hazelden Publishing)
The disease of Addiction does not
discriminate. About 10% of the population world wide is
afflicted with addiction, and it affects all walks of life.
Addicts are doctors, lawyers, judges, housewives, bums,
authors, pilots, students, clergymen... and movie stars. No
group or profession is spared from this lethal disease.
While most addicts are "regular people" whose lives are
otherwise prosaic and private, the addicts who we all tend to
remember are public figures whose lives of addiction have been
tragically chronicled in the Hollywood tabloids and national
newspaper headlines. There's something about a "big crash"
that is at the same time titillating yet profoundly sad and
impossible to forget.
Elvis Presley, Jimmi Hendrix, Grace Slick, John Belushi, Chris
Farley, Kurt Cobain, Elton John, Joe Walsh, Johnny Cash. This
is but a short list of movie stars and rock music icons whose
garish lives while in their addiction are well known to the
world. The often tragic endings of these public figures'
stories speak for themselves about the seriousness and lethal
nature of the disease of addiction.
Gary Stromberg is public relations executive who
co-founded Gibson and Stromberg, a large and influential music
public relations firm of the seventies. He represented such
luminaries as The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Muhammad Ali,
Barbra Streisand, Boyz II Men, Neil Diamond, Ray Charles, The
Doors, Earth, Wind and Fire, Elton John, Three Dog Night, and
Crosby, Stills, & Nash. Together with co-author Jane Merrill,
he has written a book wherein he recounts the intimate stories
of many of the addict-stars about which we have all heard and
read.
Gary's
book,
The Harder They Fall
centers on lengthy interviews with 21 celebrities who have hit
rock bottom as a result of their addiction and have then risen
once again to achieve success while in recovery. Most, but not
all, of the celebrities in the book reached peak stardom
during the drug-induced 60s and 70s and are currently living
lives of extraordinary accomplishment despite their battles
with addiction. The generational focus provides a cultural
history as well. The interviews and their introductions give
readers a basic understanding of addiction, its process and
it’s consequences. They also inspire, as the celebrities
humbly reveal how human and vulnerable they are by disclosing
information about the depths of their despair and the joys of
their recovery.
This Saturday night Gary will join us as our guest and will
recount the stories of many addicted stars, most of which were
able to turn their lives around and resurrect their shattered
lives and careers while in recovery. We can learn from these
fascinating stories that recovery IS an option...and that
RECOVERY WORKS!!!

STRAIGHT TALK FROM THE
DOC by Dr Steve
More Other Stuff for
Alcoholism: Revia
The past few weeks I’ve been discussing various available
medication options for alcoholics who wish to have additional
tools that help them stay sober. General knowledge of the fact
that such medications exist is limited; only 2-3 % of patients
(alcoholics) who might benefit from these medications know that
they even exist.
Campral is a newer medication that is thought to restore the
glutamate brain receptors back towards their normal "pre-drug"
state. In limited clinical studies it improves sobriety rates by
about 2-3 times as compared to placebo.
Antabuse is an older sobriety medication that is used
essentially as a drinking “deterrent” by causing the alcoholic
to get acutely ill when drinking alcohol while taking it
concurrently. Antabuse has largely has fallen to the wayside and
is generally considered to be a second-tier choice.
This week I will talk about the third and final FDA-approved
drug for alcoholism: Revia, or, naltrexone.
Revia is an opiate receptor blocker which is used primarily and
most commonly in opiate addicts. In opiate addicts, Revia is
given in order to prevent the addict from getting “high” when
using heroin or any other opiate. Why, then, would Revia be
helpful for an alcohol addict???
It was found serendipitously in the early 1990’s that heroin
addicts who also drank alcohol found that when they were on
Naltrexone, the effect of drinking alcohol was not nearly as
pleasant as before. In essence, it seemed that there was
something about Revia that interfered with the brain’s response
to alcohol. It seemed to blunt the usual euphoric sensation that
normally results.
Cravings for alcohol therefore declined. Most likely, there
exists a complex inter-play between the various brain receptors
that are involved with the phenomenon of addiction, specifically
including the endorphin, or opiate, receptors. Altering any one
of these receptor complexes can have helpful therapeutic
effects, regardless the specific drug being used.
As compared to
Campral (which works in a different way to help alcoholics
stay sober) sobriety rates with Revia are about equal. The
combination of
Campral plus Revia is thought to be additive, so taking them
together is certainly an option. There are no significant side
effects to taking Revia.
My opinion?? Revia will increase sobriety rates slightly, and
should be carefully considered by the chronically relapsing
alcoholic who needs that "extra help".
This is Dr Steve, giving it to you straight!!

THOUGHT FOR RECOVERY- by BOB MUNCK
Each week
on our show this past year, Bob has shares his "Thought for
Recovery", a unique personal reflection meant to inspire those
of us in Recovery. This is from a man with 15 years of
personal sobriety, and with many years of recovery leadership.
He has seen and heard it all. He has sponsored hundreds of men
during that time. Bob's "Thoughts" will focus on pearls of
wisdom that all alcoholics and addicts in Recovery can use to
enhance their own Recovery. We reprint this week's Thought for
Recovery here:
How Does One Best Start One’s Day?
by Bob Munck
We should begin our day with a positive mental outlook, no
matter what is happening in our life. We can train ourselves
to look for the best in ourselves and in others.
We should first look outwards from ourselves, and acknowledge
God, and to pray and meditate that He is in charge of our
life.
During a time of difficulty or pain, we have choices. We can
choose a "doomsday" attitude that will constantly replay all
of our negative thoughts and sink us into Depression. Or, we
can step back and find that one good thing in ourselves or
others that will start our day right. We may be hurting with
pain, and our day may appear hopeless and dark. But God and
Recovery each guarantee to us that we are equal to the day
ahead; that even in our pain there is always at least one good
thing in our life.
We have the power of choice that will guide our own fate. We
can change even the most difficult and hurtful situations with
an attitude of hope and positive expectation.
If we approach each day with a prayerful heart; our positive
self will give us a different and very much better approach to
our troubles.
Dear God I pray today that you will help me find the one
good thing that I need to know in my life. Please Help me let
go of all my fear and negativity. Amen

MARKETING OPPORTUNITIES
WITH RECOVERY RADIO
Recovery Radio Seeks
Show Sponsors
The
Recovery Radio Show is more that just a radio show.
We are a comprehensive set of resources for addicts and their
families. Our uniqueness is that each week we reach hundreds of
thousands of addicts and their families who are still
suffering…over 500,000 people each week. We do this in many
ways, the most obvious of which is over the airwaves every
Saturday night in Los Angeles and 10 other cities,
coast-to-coast.
In addition, we will soon be publishing “California Together”,
a monthly newspaper targeted at the recovery community
throughout Southern California. We will be publishing this in
partnership with Bill and Barbara Brown, publishers of “Arizona
Together”, which periodical has been meeting the needs of
the Arizona recovery community for over 15 years. The two will
be sister publications.
We maintain one of the most popular “recovery radio” websites in
the world! Both Google and Yahoo have rated ours to be #4, and
this after only 6 months of existence! That is phenomenal, and
testimony to the fact that we are “doing something right!” Our
weekly e-newsletter, the FLASH! reaches many people each week as
well, with timely updates on what is happening with Recovery
Radio and the recovery world in general.
Future projects include an “800 HELPLINE”, the HOW Program USA
“recovery scholarships”, Fourth Step Workshops with Bob and Dr
Steve, and “The Art of Recovery- Southern California” recovery
community annual convention.
What does this all mean? It means that those organizations whose
business is related to recovery and/or recovery products have a
unique opportunity to engage- at the ground-floor level- in an
extremely effective marketing alliance with The Recovery Radio
Show.
Ours is a highly-targeted audience. We reach over 500,000 people
each week (conservative estimate). Approximately 60% of our
callers are family members or loved ones of an alcoholic or
addict who NEEDS RECOVERY. They are looking for solutions to get
their loved on into recovery. About 30% of our callers are from
addicts or alcoholics who are IN RECOVERY, and want and need
recovery-oriented products.
More so, ALL of our listeners are learning more about a
societal problem that in reality affects essentially every
single person in this nation. Addiction is by far the #1 public
health problem in the nation today, costing our society over $4
Billion/year. It is long overdue that our nation accepts
addiction for the medical disease that it is. We are doing our
part to effect that change.
If you are with a business or organization that might benefit
from a marketing relationship with Recovery Radio, please
contact us. We will be happy to discuss the many ways that you
can benefit from joining our team…and at the same time help AND
benefit from our growing fan and listener base.
