DUAL DIAGNOSIS: SELF-MEDICATION OF
UNTREATED CO-OCCURING PSYCH DISORDERS
"Dual Diagnosis" is
a term used to describe the combination of a mental or
emotional disorder in addition to the disease of addiction.
For instance: The combination of bipolar affective disorder
plus methamphetamine addiction. Or, ADHD (Attention Deficit
and Hyperactivity Disorder) plus cocaine addiction. Both of
these are commonly seen co-occurring disorders. There are many
others.
Why is the concept of Dual Diagnosis so important? Why
do treatment providers focus on finding a second co-occurring
disorder when they consider a rehab and recovery prescription
for any particular addict?
The reason is that having two simultaneous symbiotic
conditions complicates the approach to treatment- not just a
little, but a lot. In fact, treatment for dual diagnoses is
exponentially more complex than for "simple addiction". The
underlying mental or emotional problem MUST be adequately
controlled in and of itself in order for recovery from drugs
and alcohol to even have a chance of being successful.
The reason
that dual diagnoses mix together in the first place is
intuitive. In simple terms, addiction to a drug or alcohol
represents self-medication for the underlying disorder.
Persons with an undiagnosed, untreated mental or emotional
disorder may blunder happenstance into a drug that just
happens to help their underlying problem. Then, they are off
and running if they have addictive genes and addictive
tendencies as well.
A person with undiagnosed endogenous depression may be
introduced to meth by a friend at a party. He or she finds
immediately that her depression is suddenly lifted, and for
days; not just a couple hours. It is an apparent miracle!!
Once this occurs, she will naturally and understandably
self-medicate with that new drug, but will do so with excess
and compulsively to the point of ruin.
Another example is bipolar affective disorder plus cocaine
addiction. Cocaine resolves the depression part of bipolar
disorder. Yet another example is the combination of severe
anxiety disorder plus chronic alcoholism. Anyone with anxiety
knows that an alcoholic drink will immediately and predictably
calm down even the worst and deepest cases of "nerves" and
will make things bearable. Those who suffer from true anxiety
know that the sensation of severe anxiety can be absolutely
horrible. These individuals who suffer from severe anxiety
disorder are set-ups for manifesting chronic alcoholism or
benzidiazepine addiction (Valium, Xanax, others).
Unfortunately,
dually-diagnosed addicts are unable to control their
self-medicating drug use. Therein lies the problem.
The approach to treatment of dual diagnoses is twofold:
1) Identify with certainty any underlying emotional or
psychiatric disorder that may exist, and 2) Treat that
co-occurring disorder with non-addictive medications and other
techniques such as therapy, self-hypnosis, acupuncture, etc.
BEFORE and SIMULTANEOUSLY with rehab treatment for the drug
addiction.
Addicts suffering dual diagnoses are well-advised to seek a
rehab facility that specializes in the treatment of dual
diagnosis. Increasingly, drug and alcohol treatment centers
are focusing on this important issue, and adding the staff and
resources necessary to effectively address dual diagnosis.
This Saturday we will discuss Dual Diagnoses, the most common
combinations seen, and the nuances of dealing with them.
Don’t miss this exciting and highly informative show! Live!!

TRIAD TREATMENT CENTER IS OUR NEW SPONSOR
Recovery
Radio Show welcomes
TRIAD Treatment Center as our new anchor sponsor!!
TRIAD, located in a convenient office location near John Wayne
Airport in Orange County, CA provides addicts with the exclusive
and proprietary NeuroTransmitter Restoration System (NTR™). NTR™
is an office-based outpatient medical treatment process that
gives the newly-recovering addict a jump-start into Recovery.
In coming weeks TRIAD will sponsor the hourly “TRIAD Corner” on
the Recovery Radio Show. During this informative segment, Bob
and Dr Steve will provide fascinating updates and cutting-edge
tips about medical approaches to the treatment of addiction. We
will interview doctors, addictionologists, patients, drug
counselors, scientists, and lots of other knowledgeable and
entertaining guests- all to help YOU and your family to better
understand recovery from addictions.
NTR™ is a 10
day series of specially-developed and naturally-occurring
intravenous amino acid infusions which helps the drug-damaged
brain to heal much more quickly than normal upon cessation of
drug use, including alcohol.
NTR™
does the following:
- markedly reduces or even eliminates drug cravings
- speeds up the return of normal brain function (‘clears the
brain”; lucid thought processes)
- significantly eases the discomfort of the “detox” phase of
drug and alcohol treatment
All three benefits of NTR™ are HUGE and cannot be overstated. In
a word, NTR™ is revolutionary and will change the very approach
to treatment of addiction from here forward. It is not fluff. It
is real.
Prior to NTR™, there were no truly effective medical approaches
to the treatment of drug addiction. NTR™ heals the addict’s
brain at the cellular and molecular level. The best we had for
addiction treatment prior to NTR™was AA (Alcoholics Anonymous)
and other 12-Step groups, which addressed only the emotional and
spiritual components of addiction.
There is no cure for drug addiction. There is only lasting
remission, and only IF the addict addresses all three components
of the disease of addiction. Adding the NTR™ treatment process
at the "front end" and including it in a blended three-prong
approach (medical, emotional, spiritual) greatly improves the
likelihood of ongoing recovery. This blended approach may
include formal rehab treatment as well, and should always
include ongoing participation in a 12-Step group and getting a
sponsor and using him/her. NTR™ is best viewed as a powerful
medical tool that provides the addict with a “jump start into
recovery”.
We know that addiction is a disease, not a moral lapse or
lifestyle choice. It is a three-part disease which includes
Medical, Emotional, and Spiritual components. All three elements
of the disease MUST be addressed concomitantly in order to
expect durable, lasting remission in Recovery.
NTR™ is the missing link in the recovery puzzle. For once, the
addict can now address all three elements of the disease of
addiction. NTR™ is step one. Rehab and 12-Step participation
closely follows; the latter (12-Steps and sponsor) should
continue for life.
The NTR™ experience at
TRIAD Treatment Center is tailored to the individual addict.
It is administered by specially trained clinicians in a
comfortable outpatient clinic setting, under the supervision of
Medical Director Dr. Neil Neimark. Dr. Neimark is a
board-certified family practitioner with a strong background and
understanding of both addiction disease, as well as medical
approaches to treating it.

TRIAD website (under
construction) for more information, or may call the TRIAD office

STRAIGHT TALK FROM THE
DOC by Dr Steve
NTR(TM)
and Recovery
Neurotransmitter
Restoration, or
NTR™, is a
wonderful new medical tool for helping addicts get a “jump
start” into recovery. It has been in existence for over 20
years, but only recently has it become available in the USA and
in Southern California.
PROMETA™ is another new addiction treatment with
similar therapeutic effects; you may have heard of it, too.
NTR™ addresses the
physiologic changes that occur in the brain as a result of
chronic drug use. All drugs of addiction resemble natural
neurotransmitters or affect those synapses in the brain’s
pleasure center, and over time the brain changes as it tries to
adapt to the ongoing presence of the drug. This is referred to
as “physiologic drug tolerance”, or, drug addicted brain.
Upon completion of
NTR™- in about 10
days- the addict now has reduced or eliminated drug cravings,
his brain function is much more clear and lucid, and, he has
gotten through the very difficult “detox” phase much more
comfortably than going “cold turkey”. Detox is that time period
during which the drug-addicted brain is becoming accustomed to
no longer having drugs within the system. During that time frame
it normally is in chaos and is essentially non-functional.
Now what? Is the addict cured?
Absolutely NOT!!!
NTR™ must be looked at solely as a great way to get a head
start on the life-long process of Recovery. With the disease of
addiction, there is no cure; only enduring remission, and, only
as long as the addict works a program of recovery, addressing
the other two elements of addiction- the Emotional and
Spiritual.
For most addicts starting on the road to recovery, the journey
may start with NTR™. Then, he is well-advised to go into Rehab,
where he will learn the necessary facts he need to know about
his disease. Rehab is all about learning how to live
differently, to respond differently to stressful triggers of
drug use, and, to avoid dreaded relapse. Ongoing participation
in a 12-Step group is critical, as is getting a sponsor and
using him.
With Drug addiction, there is is no quick fix.
My Opinion: Neurotransmission Restorations, or
NTR™, is a wonderful
new Medical Tool providing a dramatic jump start into recovery.
To stay sober, it takes WORK, and a life-time of it.
This is Dr Steve, giving it to you straight!!!

4. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY- by BOB MUNCK
Each week
on our show this past year, Bob has shares his "Thought for
Recovery", a unique personal reflection meant to inspire those
of us in Recovery. This is from a man with 15 years of
personal sobriety, and with many years of recovery leadership.
He has seen and heard it all. He has sponsored hundreds of men
during that time. Bob's "Thoughts" will focus on pearls of
wisdom that all alcoholics and addicts in Recovery can use to
enhance their own Recovery. We reprint this week's Thought for
Recovery here:
Eating Disorders: "Do you like the Way I Look???" ...NOT!!!
At least 85% of
the women in America are on a diet. And this is not the first
diet they've tried. For many, life has been on one long,
continual diet- or series of gains and losses.
It doesn't much matter whether the reason for this diet roller
coaster is compulsive overeating, binging, purging,
exercising, shopping, starving, anorexia, bulimia, or any
combination of these behaviors. You know when you are in
trouble. You know when you hide your eating; or if you lie to
others about it. If all you think about is eating or not
eating, you've got a problem.
But here's the deal: It’s not about being fat, average or
skinny!!
Let's make it clear, It is not the food. It is not about
calories or fat grams, or good and bad food. It's all about
control. It's about feeling out of control and trying to make
other people notice and love you. It's like filling up an
endless hole, right there inside of us. And it's no wonder we
do it with food. Food equals love for many of us. It is still
the message of love for many of us.
We know that eating can take away that awful, almost constant
feeling of aloneness. There is something missing in our life
and we need to find it. Food seems to provide the road map to
that missing part, so we take it again and again, only to
reach the same dead end. Every day is a struggle. No one else
seems to understand. and nobody even cares!
We are drunk on our own brain chemicals!!
What a dilemma! Once we get started on this road to
destruction, it seems like there is no turning back. Our own
brain reacts to our obsessive and compulsive behavior,
flooding our system with a rush of intoxicating neurochemicals.
For a moment we feel better, we feel in control again. But,
our thinking remains impaired. Food and compulsive eating
behaviors work for a little while. Until they don't work at
all, anymore.
Getting Help
It is at this point we must reach out for help. We ourselves
are the only ones who can take the first step. We have to
admit that our life is in a mess, despite all of our best
efforts to control it. And we need help. We can't do it alone.

WOMEN NEEDED TO SHARE THEIR STORY ON
CABLE TV PROGRAM “SECRET LIVES OF WOMEN”
TV Show seeks “functioning” female addicts for on-air
documentary series
(alcohol, meth, sex)
Women’s
Entertainment Network (WE) is a cable television channel
whose focus is on women: their lives, their interests, their
jobs, their hobbies, their joys, their sorrows, their
problems- EVERYTHING and anything that appeals to the female
gender.
I recently received a phone call from one of the producers of
the WE show “Secret
Lives of Women”, which is in its second season and airs on
Tuesday evenings at 10:30P in those cable system areas that
carry WE. They are looking for 3 women who might be willing to
be interviewed for an episode of this “real-life” documentary
series (NOT “reality TV”!!). The show chronicles the actual
lives of women in various situations and who are facing
various significant or unusual challenges, “demons”, or other
special issues of concern.
They would like to find three women who would be interested in
sharing their lives as being:

MARKETING OPPORTUNITIES
WITH RECOVERY RADIO
Recovery Radio Seeks
Show Sponsors
The
Recovery Radio Show is more that just a radio show.
We are a comprehensive set of resources for addicts and their
families. Our uniqueness is that each week we reach hundreds of
thousands of addicts and their families who are still
suffering…over 500,000 people each week. We do this in many
ways, the most obvious of which is over the airwaves every
Saturday night in Los Angeles and 10 other cities,
coast-to-coast.
In addition, we will soon be publishing “California Together”,
a monthly newspaper targeted at the recovery community
throughout Southern California. We will be publishing this in
partnership with Bill and Barbara Brown, publishers of “Arizona
Together”, which periodical has been meeting the needs of
the Arizona recovery community for over 15 years. The two will
be sister publications.
We maintain one of the most popular “recovery radio” websites in
the world! Both Google and Yahoo have rated ours to be #4, and
this after only 6 months of existence! That is phenomenal, and
testimony to the fact that we are “doing something right!” Our
weekly e-newsletter, the FLASH! reaches many people each week as
well, with timely updates on what is happening with Recovery
Radio and the recovery world in general.
Future projects include an “800 HELPLINE”, the HOW Program USA
“recovery scholarships”, Fourth Step Workshops with Bob and Dr
Steve, and “The Art of Recovery- Southern California” recovery
community annual convention.
What does this all mean? It means that those organizations whose
business is related to recovery and/or recovery products have a
unique opportunity to engage- at the ground-floor level- in an
extremely effective marketing alliance with The Recovery Radio
Show.
Ours is a highly-targeted audience. We reach over 500,000 people
each week (conservative estimate). Approximately 60% of our
callers are family members or loved ones of an alcoholic or
addict who NEEDS RECOVERY. They are looking for solutions to get
their loved on into recovery. About 30% of our callers are from
addicts or alcoholics who are IN RECOVERY, and want and need
recovery-oriented products.
More so, ALL of our listeners are learning more about a
societal problem that in reality affects essentially every
single person in this nation. Addiction is by far the #1 public
health problem in the nation today, costing our society over $4
Billion/year. It is long overdue that our nation accepts
addiction for the medical disease that it is. We are doing our
part to effect that change.
If you are with a business or organization that might benefit
from a marketing relationship with Recovery Radio, please
contact us. We will be happy to discuss the many ways that you
can benefit from joining our team…and at the same time help AND
benefit from our growing fan and listener base.
