MOMMY'S LITTLE HELPER -
Valium, Xanax,
Ativan, and other "BENZOS"
Valium (diazepam) arrived on the scene back in the 1960's and
immediately supplanted barbiturates as the "sedative of choice". It is a
"downer". Hailed as both "safe and effective", it quickly became known
as "Mommy's little helper". It was the "perfect solution" for many women
back then who were struggling to deal with the vexities of daily life:
bobbling children, family life, husbands, and their addictions. It is no
different today. Benzos are a huge problem for many, but are more often
seen in younger and middle-aged women whose lives are primarily centered
in the home.
Since Valium and other benzos require a doctor's prescription, it was
easy to justify their use. After all, "If my doctor prescribed it, and
recommended it to me, what can possibly be wrong with it??" Thus argued
many women who then began the inexorable sink into addiction and the
ensuing chaos.
This week we will discuss the benzodiazepines: Valium, Xanax,
Ativan, Klonipin, and many others. When first put into common use,
this class of drugs was thought to be the perfect solution for
management of anxiety. Again, "Benzos" are sedatives, and work by
docking at "benzodiazepine" receptors in the brain. They inter-relate
with a complex of neuro-modulators that ultimately affect and enhance
the GABA (gamma-amino buteric acid) receptor system. End result is
calming and sedation.
GABA is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter in all vertebrates.
Enhancing the GABA effect causes calming of neuronal activity in the
brain. Alcohol, working through a more ill-defined mechanism, also has
the same ultimate result of enhancing GABA activity, and with very
similar clinical effects to benzos. Therefore, it's not surprising that
Valium and other benzos are commonly used interchangeably by alcoholics,
and in fact benzos have utility in treating alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
Many alcoholics and other people with underlying anxiety disorder
naturally gravitate towards use of benzodiazepines.
While benzodiazepines and alcohol share many characteristics, they
differ in many ways. The drug withdrawal syndrome of benzos is similar
to alcohol withdrawal (agitation, tremulousness, severe anxiety,
hallucinations, seizures), but is much more prolonged. In fact, with the
longer-acting benzos such as xanax and Klonopin, the withdrawal syndrome
may not start for days after cessation of use, but will continue for
weeks or even months. Detoxing off benzodiazepines is commonly cited as
being perhaps the most difficult and problematic detoxes for this
reason. Also, because so many benzo addicts are "dual diagnosis" addicts
with the combination of addiction plus severe underlying anxiety
disorder, the terrible anxiety that is now unmasked and un-medicated is
quite difficult to tolerate and manage.
We will discuss Benzodiazepines, describe their unique challenges in the
context of addiction and recovery, and will provide our listeners with
the information and tools they need to better deal with "benzo

BRAIN RESTORATION THERAPIES FOR ADDICTION
Recovery starts
with ridding the drug-adapted brain of the drug.
Medically-assisted detox is currently the standard of care in
most rehab facilities.
Last week I pointed out that even at the end of the 3-7 day
medically-assisted detox, the drug adapted brain is still not
normal. In fact, it is in a state of malfunction that will last
for weeks, months and even years. Sometimes damage remains.
Studies have shown how severely impaired the recently-detoxed
brain can be: cognitive testing often reflects loss of 20 -30 IQ
points as compared to baseline. For someone starting with an IQ
of 120- which is well above the average of 100- this loss of
function will put that person well below average in terms of
cognitive function.
Medical detox uses substitute drugs or medications to ease the
withdrawal period and essentially prolongs the detox phase such
that the brain can adapt gradually and gently.
What are the other options? Is there anything available today
that does better for the addict than medical detox?
PROMETA™ and
NTR™, or
Neurotransmitter Restoration Treatment, are two
recently-available medical treatments for addiction that go well
beyond simply easing the speed and discomfort of withdrawal.
Keep in mind that the drug-adapted brain has been bathed in
drugs continually for months or years; it has changed and it
does not function normally. Under normal circumstances it take
months or years for those changes to revert to it's original
healthy, pre-drug state or close to it.
PROMETA™ and
NTR™ both stimulate
the brain cells and synapses to much more quickly revert to
normal. This process is what is referred to as "brain
restoration" treatment. They differ in how they accomplish this
brain repair process, but they each appear to lead to a similar
end result. Both techniques do the following:
- Ease the discomfort of withdrawal
- Speed up return of normal brain function
- Decrease or eliminate drug cravings.
All three benefits must be considered HUGE.
My opinion?? For decades science has been searching for a truly
effective treatment for the physiologic (medical) aspects of
drug addition. We have now found it in

NTR™. Brain
restoration treatment for addiction is revolutionary and is
bound to change the entire approach to treatment of drug and
alcohol addiction.

THE
SILENT TREATMENT PROJECT- IN YOUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER
The
“silent treatment” is what we do when we shift our eyes and our attention
away from something we wish to avoid or pretend doesn't exist. It is
extremely passive-aggressive. This is historically how America has chosen
to deal with its #1 public health problem: Addiction.
"Silent Treatment" is also
the name of a vibrant and ambitious upcoming national public awareness
initiative and information campaign, which will roll out on August 2nd. It
will bring the subject of addiction out into the open, and into the
forefront- as it should be. Addiction affects fully 60% of our nation,
either directly (about 10%) or indirectly, the latter by its impact on
those surrounding and deeply affected by the active addict.
Our guests on our show July 29th were Jane McDonnell and Thom Forbes, both
key participants in The Silent Treatment initiative. The intent of the
Silent Treatment campaign is to drive readers to their website, where
there exists a huge repository of information and resources for dealing
with Addictions. The Recovery Radio Show is proud to have been chosen from
a large field of existing recovery-oriented radio shows nationwide to
participate in the Silent Treatment process. Our podcast is available on
the Silent Treatment website on their audio content and recovery radio
section.
This series will premier on August 2nd, being distributed nationwide by
McClatchy-Tribune Information Services. Their effort operates under a
grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The intent is to bring
attention to the issue and to put pressure on America to change its way of
looking at Addiction. The hope is to change how we view addiction; from
the historical and inaccurate view as a moral lapse/lifestyle choice, to
the much more correct medical disease model and the huge #1 public health
problem that it really is.
The planning for this effort began over a year ago and is timed to
coincide with National Recovery Month, which is September.
Recovery Radio strongly recommends to our listeners and readers that
they take a look at The Silent
Treatment website. There is much great information and resources
there to help not only the recovering addict with solidifying one's own
recovery, but for helping a loved one find it, as well. The whole point of
The Silent Treatment project is to bash stigma over alcoholism and
addiction, and to provide the tools and resources necessary to find
recovery.
