Robert Munck
Co-Host and Co-Founder

Bob Munck

Bob M.,”  is a former NCAA Division 1 football player and a former National Director of Mortgage Banking of a $250 million corporation. As co-host and co-founder of The Recovery is the show’s spiritual leader and has been sober for 14 years.

One evening nearly two decades ago, Bob M. told his wife he was going to the local market to buy a pack of cigarettes. He returned 5 months later, addicted to drugs and a full-blown alcoholic with two jail sentences hanging over his head. He served his time in Orange and San Diego counties, had a “moment of clarity” while in lockup, and vowed to turn his life around. It wasn’t easy, and he didn’t know if those he had betrayed – mainly his wife and three children – would ever find it in their hearts to forgive him for abandoning them at a time when he was a successful mortgage banker and they were living a typical upper-middle-class life.

Little by little, so achingly slow that at times his progress was nearly undetectable, he clawed his way back to a now vastly different, but stable and sober lifestyle. He achieved a new and sober life by not taking a drink or a drug one day at a time, but he wasn’t alone. With the help of a group of relative strangers – members of Alcoholics Anonymous -- he diligently worked to complete the 12 steps that are the foundation of AA. After spending two years trying to survive on the streets, sleeping in motels or abandoned buildings, living with drug
runners and dealers, felons and petty thieves, all of whom were drug addicts who’d just as soon murder him for his drugs and money as they would join with him to steal and rob in order to get that next “fix,” he finally surrendered to God, asking only for His help in finding a way out of the reprehensible lifestyle he was living.

He also prayed for forgiveness. “Please, Lord, forgive my sins against all of those I’ve hurt, for those I’ve walked out on, for what I’ve done to my wife and my children, and for what I’ve done to my employees. Can You find it in Your grace to ever forgive me? Oh, Lord, I am in the darkest of places and I need Your help. My soul in stained, Lord, my soul is stained. Please lead me out of this wicked and immoral lifestyle.” Amen.

“I needed help,” he says now. “I knew I couldn’t do it alone.”
He found the help he needed in Alcoholics Anonymous and has now been sober for nearly a decade and one-half. A born-again Christian, Bob, who also serves as a Leader, founded Recovery Ministries and is a popular speaker on recovery issues, often appearing with his eldest son, at men’s recovery retreats and other gatherings. His witness on what it was like for him on the streets, what happened and what it’s like now is so compelling that the only sound coming from the dumbfounded audience are the sobs of grown men who can identify with his life story.
